Tool Chest
15 July 2014
I went to the shop to clean up a bit, and as I was putting away my tools, I got distracted and started building a tool box for my layout tools - mostly Starrett stuff. Starrett makes very nice tooling, so I decided to build a nice box to complement the tools. A while back I built cherry doors for my house and I had a lot of odd sized 3/4" cherry plywood - perfect for a toolbox. Proper planning is essential to all good craftsmanship, so I am including a copy of my detailed engineering drawings (at right) for reference. I got a bit carried away and spent some time at the lathe making some brass knobs for the drawers. Each has a small piece of rosewood inlaid in the top. The odd thin hex dealies are to space out the screws as I was too lazy to cut the screws off and I kind of like the look of the spacers. The biggest hassle making knobs getting them all exactly the same. Yes, there are 9 knobs - I always build an extra as a safeguard. |
Here is the chest with a partial finish and no knobs. Notice how true to the drawing the actual chest is. The drawer fronts are one piece of nicely figured cherry.
Yeah, that's a dog chew toy on the floor - my bad.
