Small Cherry Box for a friend 25 May 2016
I was milling around in the shop and found some nice cherry ends which looked like they would have good grain for a small box, so I got to it. The box is dovetailed and I left a slightly wider space between the two top tails so I could slice the box apart. This makes for a perfectly matching top - the grain follows the base and the base and top are exactly the same size. To cut it in half, I just run it across the tablesaw on the four sides.
There are two coats of poly in this picture, and the box needs a lot of sanding, which I take down to 600 grit for these small projects.
The hinges are let in now and more sanding has been done.
I cut the leather oversized and attached it to a piece ion yardstick using 3M Super 88. I have already let in the hinges, which are made by Brusso. They open 100 degrees. There are 3 coats of finish on this photo.
Seven coats of poly which was sanded down to 1500 grit. The leather is applied to the top and bottom. The last step is to add felt buttons to the bottom so it doesn't get all scratched up. The hinges are nice and they hold the top open at 100 degrees.
Perhaps I should have cleared out my dog's chew toys before taking the picture.
