Beam Steam Engine Jan 2013
It's kind of sad, but I am a steampunk fan. Steam engines are the heart of that mysterious, thrumming power behind the steampunk genre. So I decided to build one or two of them. This page is mostly dedicated to the Stuart Beam Engine shown at right. The Beam is a fun engine to machine and not terribly challenging, mostly because Stuart does such a fine job of casting their components. The Beam can handle slow speeds easily and is a pleasure to watch when running.
This project has kept me occupied for several years, so progress will be slow. |

Here is one of the main bearings machined, along with a raw casting. There are four of these bearings on a beam engine. Just machining the bearings takes quite a bit of time, but the results are worth it. I have machined all four. The little thingy on the top is an oil cup.
