Speaker Stands 13 Nov 2014
Last night my wife informed me that our son, Justin, would like a set of speaker stands for his birthday on the 26th. Ouch, it's the 12th... Best get cracking.
I remember walking into a friend's family room and when he turned on his stereo, I immediately thought "That speaker system needs dampening in the stands." OK, that's completely not true; I have never understood the fascination people have with insignificant details like that. I have another friend who (why is the 'w' silent?) thinks his system has benefitted from a audiophile line cord upgrade - good grief. All that said, what if the stands I built, would benefit from some dampening? I should build them so Justin can experiment, and perhaps prove me wrong.
I'm not big on drawing up plans, but I knew I wanted the stands to be about 24" tall and capable of supporting Justin's speakers which are Adam A7s. So I grabbed a 8" wide cherry board about 10 feet long and started cutting. Here is what I came up with for the columns: The little plates at top will have an additional hole to fill the column with sand, birdseed, kitty litter... whatever. It's a little cold in my shop, so I do most of my glue-up in my kitchen. The granite countertops are super flat and wonderful as a reference surface. You can see the top and bottom mounting holes in the little plates (for a lack of a better term). These have steel threaded inserts so as to not wear out easily. I have enough clamps - I just prefer using rubber bands when I can get away with it.
