My favorite hobby - Woodworking
I was thinking one day... "how about a nice Chinese Chippendale piece for my living room?" So, as this was my first carved piece, I thought to start simple. I found the plans in a book and after completing the foot stool in mahogany, I decided to give it to my Mom. She seems to like it.
I built this bench about thirty years ago when I lived in Los Angeles. The cherry on top is a Mission style bed my son, Justin, and I are making.
Some progress on the mission style bed for my son and daughter-in-law, so I thought I would post a picture. The slats were machined this afternoon, so they are a lot lighter, but will darken naturally. I am not a fan of staining cherry.
I found some time this weekend, so I glued up the footboard for the bed. I tapered the posts so it looks a little lighter, but it is still a massive piece.
Some say that the heart of a woodshop is the workbench, but I tend to do most of my work on the table saw. The metal shop is in the background.
A look at one of the hanging tool cabinets... one half of one at least. I built this cabinet about ten years ago. Its cherry of course.
I really like formal furniture and have built a few Queen Ann and Chippendale pieces. This I built about 25 years ago as my first Queen Ann project.
I also like Asian design quite a bit. This little box is a derivative of a box I built for my Curta calculator. I turned the lid on the lathe and eased the detail webbing in by hand. The handle is Brazilian Rosewood with abalone inlay, the top is birch, the sides are Bacote and the bottom is cherry (of course). I just noticed that everything on the table is Asian, although the table itself is Mission.
