Iron Man Mark I Arc Reactor 6 November 2015
Kurosawa at therpf has created a kit of parts for the mark I arc reactor from the first Iron Man Movie and I kind of want one, so here it is before any real work has been done on it. The parts are mostly aluminum with a bit of brass and resin for the rings. The water jet cutter leaves a surface which will necessitate a bit of cleanup work, unless you want it to look like it was constructed in a cave... from scrap. Kurosawa has done a great job on his kit and it is well worth the price. This may take me a few days/months to complete. Polishing those small brass rings is going to be tricky - I can imagine the buffer taking them and tossing them across the shop where they wind up in a crushed heap. Better not use the large buffer for any of these pieces.

The fins are filed down now and for some sanding has been done. They are still a bit rough, and need to be blackened before gluing to the cage assembly. Here is a photo showing how the cage will build up.

I decided to make a display stand for my Car Reactor. But first, a bit of explaining. The kit I have is very frustrating to build, and a student of mine bought one from a Chinese supplier on eBay, so I got one too. As I build the new kit, I built a stand for it. The front ring is bronze and the back ring is aluminum. They are bolted together with six cap screws. The base is 1/2" bronze plate. I think the post holding up the ring is too long, so I will shorten it tomorrow.
The darn thing is very heavy!

All polished out and ready for a clear coat of lacquer. This is needed as bronze really reacts to fingerprints. I have a small bronze plaque being printed to mount on the base.

The Arc Reactor kit arrived and I assembled it this afternoon. So, here it is in its stand.
